KERRY KING Says New SLAYER-Inspired ESPN Promo Is 'Awesome'
September 10, 2012Prior to last Friday's (September 7) "Metal Masters 4" clinic in New York City, Artisan News spoke to SLAYER guitarist Kerry King about the latest in ESPN's long-running line of "This Is SportsCenter" ads, which "take a whimsical and bizarre angle on the legendary show's behind-the-scenes productions." Their new commercial, which purports to reveal that 58-year-old NFL analyst John Clayton actually rocks a gnarly ponytail, headbangs to SLAYER and still lives with his mother, can be seen below.
Said Kerry: "The funny thing how I found out… My guy… One of the guys that sets me up at the Raiders stadium, for the Raiders games, texted me yesterday. He's like, 'Have you seen this John Clayton promo?' I'm like, 'No.' We were busy. We played for, like, four hours yesterday. And when I got back to the room, I checked it out online. I knew it had to be something like that for him to send it to me. And… [laughs] It's awesome."
"This is SportsCenter" is the name of a series of comical television commercials run by ESPN to promote their "SportsCenter" sports news show. The ads are presented in a deadpan mockumentary style, lampooning various aspects of sports, and sports broadcasting. The commercials debuted in 1994. The New York office of advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, of Portland, Oregon, is responsible for the writing and production of the commercials.
